Here are some tips to consider before travelling overseas to help you stay in touch affordably and without worry.
Using your data sparingly
1. To help control your data usage, switch your smartphone to manually retrieve emails. This will allow you to check emails, sync contacts and calendars manually instead of having the data pushed to smart phone automatically.

Blackberry® : Select "No" to Send Email To Handheld |
|
Apple® iPhone™: Turn your iPhone to 'Fetch Mode' |
2. To prevent receiving any international data charges, turn your Data Roaming setting to 'Off'.

If you are using an iPhone and know that you will need to use mobile internet when overseas, reset the Usage Tracker to Zero. This will allow you to track your estimated data usage and monitor how much you are downloading.
3. Use Wireless Hotspots in the country you are visiting where available: These 'hotspots' are often available in many international airports, hotels, and restaurants.
Check roaming rates and network sharing arrangements
Check the roaming rates before you leave to understand what you'll pay when using your mobile service overseas.
Make sure you also find out about any network sharing arrangements that might extend across some countries. Check out Vodafone's Roaming Data Bundle which offers discounted roaming rates when data roaming on preferred networks in many destinations.
Visit www.vodafone.com.au/roaming to find out about Vodafone's roaming rates and www.vodafone.com.au/dataroaming to find out about Vodafone's Roaming Data Bundles.
Divert all calls unconditionally to Voicemail
To avoid excessive calling costs, consider diverting all calls unconditionally to voicemail and record a voicemail message asking those wanting to touch base with you to either send an SMS or wait to contact you until you return to Australia.
Set up CALLscreen
A cost effective alternative to answering your phone when you're overseas, is using our Call Screen service. With CALLscreen, your incoming calls are diverted to a friendly Vodafone operator who greets your callers, takes their messages, and sends them to your mobile phone as a TXT of up to 160 characters. You can also personalise the Vodafone operator's greeting.
CALLscreen is a subscription-free service and charges are incurred when calls are diverted to your CALLscreen service. To find out more about CALLscreen and how it is charged, visit CALLscreen
The CALLscreen service is not available to Prepaid customers. To save on roaming costs, Prepaid customers should unconditionally divert their calls to their voicemail service.
Time your calls
Set the call timer on your mobile and closely monitor the length of your call. This will allow you a visual air to track your conversation length so you avoid any surprises.
What is international roaming? And is it the same as International calls (IDD)?
International roaming is a service offered that allows you to use your mobile overseas. This is available as a result of international agreements between mobile carriers.
International Roaming is not the same as IDD calls. International calls or IDD calls are calls made from Australia to a destination overseas. International roaming calls are calls made when you are using your mobile phone from overseas.
If I am going overseas, do I need to unlock my device?
If you intend to use your Vodafone Australia SIM card then you won't be required to unlock the device. However if you intend to use a SIM in the device other than your Vodafone Australia SIM, you'll need to have the device unlocked (Unlocking Fee applies). Call Customer Care for unlock code on 1555 (or +61 414 141 414).
What do I need to do before I go overseas so that I can roam?
Check which country you are travelling to and the rates applicable via www.vodafone.com.au/roaming
Activate international roaming via My Vodafone or by contacting Customer Care on 1555 before you leave.
Check if you can use your mobile in the country you are visiting. Some networks use different frequencies.
Tri-band handset required for the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and South America.
Quad band handset required for some Southern and Central American countries.
3G handset required for Japan and South Korea.
If you are unsure, call 133320 or check in your mobile phone user guide for band frequency.
If you intend on using data abroad, consider signing up to one of Vodafone's monthly Roaming Data Bundles which gives you a monthly allowance of data to use on preferred networks overseas. For some information, go to www.vodafone.com.au/dataroaming

There are four different frequency bands used by GSM mobile phone networks around the world:
900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz and 850 MHz.
Single / Dual band (GSM)
Most European GSM networks use 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies and for this reason the majority of Australian handsets fall into the category of being dual band i.e. 900MHz & 1800MHz compatible. Check your handset user manual to find out which frequencies your handset operates on.
Tri-band (GSM)
Some networks in regions such as the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and South America use the 1900MHz frequency. To use these networks you will require what is called a tri band handset. This handset allows you to use not only the 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies but also the 1900MHz frequency. Check your handset user manual to find out if your handset is tri-band and can operate on the 1900MHz frequency.
Quad-band (GSM)
Networks that operate on the 850MHz frequency are not common however some Southern and Central American networks do use this 'band'. Few handsets on the market today are 'Quad' Band and enable access to 850MHz networks. Check your handset user manual to find out if your handset is quad-band and can operate on the 850MHz frequency.
3G
To use a 3G network, you require a handset that operates on 3G (UMTS) technologies. Compatible handsets include the Vodafone/3 range of 3G handsets.

Am I able to activate my Roaming and IDD services online if I am already overseas?
If you are already registered for My Vodafone then you are able to activate Roaming and IDD settings online whilst overseas. Make sure that you switch your phone off and back on, after activating roaming to refresh your settings on the network.
If you are not already registered for My Vodafone and already overseas you will not be able to change your Roaming or IDD settings online, as you will not be able to receive the temporary My Vodafone password via TXT message.
