With the recent doubling in size of the Vodafone network across Australia, what does that mean for businesses in regional areas?

It’s early 2025. You’re on the road to visit a client or one of your branches in a regional area where mobile reception hasn’t always been the best.

You’re in the middle of an important call and not paying attention to where you are. Then it hits you as the call goes silent. The call has dropped at a crucial moment. Beads of sweat break out on your forehead.

“Yeah, that’s sounds great. We’ll see you when you get in the office.” Wait, what?

The relief washes over you like a wave. You quickly look down at your phone and see you’ve got reception. Wow.

This is now the new reality of many Vodafone customers thanks to the recent expansion of our network coverage from around 400,000 to 1,000,000 square kilometres.

So, why did we do it?

The reason

A major element of our core values is around providing added value for all our customers. Whether it’s the products we sell, the services we offer, or the customer service we deliver, we always look at how we can add extra value to everything we do.

And the recent expansion of our national network is one of the biggest examples of this.

In a recent interview with Jonathan Rutherford (Group Executive of Enterprise, Government, and Wholesale, TPG Telecom), he was asked what the driving force was behind the expansion of the network.

“All business are crying out for things that’ll make them money, save them money, and deliver better customer experiences.” He continues. “Small businesses, the lifeblood of our economy, are struggling. This expansion brings them more choice, value, and competition.”

If you haven’t seen our website or the many social posts we’ve released into the wild of late, then here are some key facts around our recent network expansion:

    - On January 30, 2025, we activated 2,444 regional mobile network sites across Australia.

    - We increased our network coverage from around 400,000 to 1,000,000 square kilometres.

    - We are now covering 98.4% of the Australian population.

    - Vodafone is now available in thousands of new areas.

The benefits

The biggest question you’re probably asking right now is “how does this benefit me and my business?”

During his interview, Jonathan Rutherford said:

“More business will be able to take secure digital payments in more regional areas, while being able to work remotely using their mobile phone from more places.”

 

When you take a deeper dive into what an expanded network means for businesses, you’ll find businesses can:

Through careful and meticulous planning, the moment the network was activated at 12pm on January 30, 2025, you had immediate access. A simple restart of your phone may have been the most extensive thing you needed to do.

Double the network. Double the data.

However, if you’re not a Vodafone or Vodafone Business customer, then to gain access to our network you’ll need to purchase one of our SIM Only plans.
