Using your own Compatible Modem with Vodafone nbn®

Vodafone offers both 4G Backup nbn® plans as well as nbn® BYO plans. Our 4G Backup nbn® plans come with the  TP-Link VX420-G2H  modem. However, if you choose our nbn® BYO Plan you will need to use your own Compatible Modem or router.

Here’s what you’ll need to know to use your own Compatible Modem or router with Vodafone nbn®.

How to set up your own Compatible Modem

  1. Before you get started, locate the login details for your modem. These are generally printed on a sticker located on the back or underside of the device.
  2. Connect a computer or mobile device to your compatible modem. Connecting via an ethernet cable and laptop is ideal, but this can also be done over Wi-Fi.
  3. Access your modem configuration page by entering its default gateway in the address bar of your internet browser. Usually, this is 192.168.1.1, but it will also be written on the sticker on the device or in the user guide
  4. Log in by using the device’s username and password. This should be printed on your device, however, some modems use “admin” as the username and password.
  5. Some modems have a setup wizard or a quick setup menu for you to follow. If there is no such option, don’t worry.  Generally, you can find the Settings/Advanced Settings (or Network Settings) and enter the below details for your connection:

    Username Your contact email address
    Password Choose your own password
    Connection Type/Encapsulation PPPoE
  6. All other details can be left as the default settings.
  7. It may take up to 2 minutes to get a connection.  If you have no connection after 2 minutes please reboot your modem or switch it off and on again.
  8. If you’re still having issues setting up your Compatible Modem, please contact your original modem provider for modem specific support information.

For FTTP, FTTC and HFC

Here’s what you’ll need to use your own Compatible Modem with Vodafone nbn® and FTTP, FTTC or HFC technology.

  • Your Compatible Modem must support Gigabit Ethernet WAN (1000 Mbps) and Fast Ethernet LAN (100 Mbps).
  • You’ll need to connect the Compatible Modem or router’s Ethernet WAN port to NBN’s NTD or NCD UNI-D (nbn® connection box mounted to the wall) port using a RJ-45 (Ethernet) cable.

Devices manufactured before 2013 may struggle to achieve the speeds available on the nbn® Superfast, nbn® Ultrafast, nbn® Superfast BYO, nbn® Ultrafast BYO plans and existing mobile customers with a Speed Upgrade from nbn® Home Fast. You should check with your device manufacturer or check the device specifications on your Approved Device or Compatible Modem (as applicable) to identify the speed capabilities and limitations of the device, including any device you use when connecting to the NBN Service.

For FTTN and FTTB

Here’s what you’ll need to use your own Compatible Modem with Vodafone nbn® and FTTN or FTTB technology.

  • Your Compatible Modem must be NBN-ready, VDSL2 certified and compatible with VDSL2 Vectoring Profile 17a.
  • You’ll need to connect the Compatible Modem DSL port to your standard telephone wall socket using an RJ-11 (telephone) cable.
