This support article provides some useful information around the Government’s School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI).
The School Student Broadband Initiative, also shortened to SSBI, is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide internet access to Australian families with school-aged children. While most households in Australia have access to the internet, some do not, and this may place children at a disadvantage to their classmates. The Australian Government has committed to providing up to 30,000 families with an nbn® service until 31 December 2025 at no cost in order to boost education opportunities. Vodafone is proud to be a participant in this important initiative.
As a participant in the School Student Broadband Initiative, Vodafone is offering an nbn® service to qualifying households until 31 December 2025 at no cost. The period in which a family can nominate for the initiative is up to 31 December 2024. The nbn® service will have a typical evening speed of 50Mbps. In addition, a modem with 4G back-up support will also be provided at no extra cost.
Typical evening speed is subject to change is measured 7pm – 11pm. Speeds vary. 4G backup is subject to mobile coverage availability and limited to 20/2Mbps.
If you have been nominated and are eligible for this initiative, then please contact Vodafone on 1800 171 005 to organise connection of your service. The operating hours of our contact centre are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm AEDT/AEST.
Actual speeds for FTTB/N/C services to be confirmed. Speed will vary on a number of factors such as technology type, plan choice and internet traffic demand. Please see our Speed Guide for more information.
To take advantage of this government initiative, you must be nominated by a third-party organisation. If you believe you are eligible for this initiative but have not been nominated, you can find more details of how to be nominated through the Federal Government’s website.
No, there are no upfront costs if you sign up to the SSBI through Vodafone. The purpose of the SSBI is to provide families who currently do not have access to the internet with an nbn® service at no cost. If you choose to sign up with Vodafone as part of the SSBI, you will not have to pay for your modem or for your nbn® service until 31 December 2025.
You do not have to be an existing customer to access the SSBI through Vodafone. If you’re eligible for this initiative, you will be able to sign up as a new Vodafone customer in order to take advantage of this initiative.

The speeds you experience will vary on a number of factors such as the nbn® technology used to deliver your service, plan choice, location, internet traffic demand, our network, line condition, the number of devices connected to your network, modem type and positioning, Wi-Fi performance, in-building wiring, and the content you access.
Services subject to number of devices connected, network coverage and your location. Our Fair Use Policy applies.
For FTTB/FTTN/FTTC services only
If you’re connecting to the nbn™ using FTTB/FTTN/FTTC technologies, then we’ll check your maximum attainable line speed once we receive this information from NBN after activation. If the maximum line speed at your address doesn’t support the speed tier of your SSBI NBN Plan (NBN50), we’ll let you know, and give you the option to: (1) remain on your SSBI NBN Plan (no action required); or (2) terminate your SSBI NBN Plan, free of charge (you must contact Vodafone to terminate your service). As there is only one SSBI NBN Plan (NBN50) available under the SSBI which is charged at $0 over the Plan Period, no refunds or plan downgrade will be available to you.
